Winter Solstice 2023

It’s the last month of 2023 - can you believe it? Sam and I are busy planning the studio schedule well into Summer 2024 already, which feels equal parts exciting and daunting!

The holiday season is already so stressful, but when we add our regular lives (homework, jobs, housework, pets, cooking, grocery shopping, medical appointments, etc. etc.) into the mix ... well, it can feel nearly overwhelming and impossible. So, we ask: How are you holding space for yourself in the midst of this busy, at times stressful, season?

Personally, I’m making space for myself to simplify my to-do list and prioritize sleep, despite the busyness of the season. If it isn’t urgent or deeply important to me, it can wait until I have the time, energy, or money to pursue it!

As we inch closer to the Winter Solstice and the darkest days of the year, I’m reminded to lean into this instinct to hibernate. In fact, a recent sleep study showed that humans need on average 2 more hours of sleep per night (!) during the winter season. If science says it’s okay, then I’m gonna let myself sleep in when I can/most need it!

Finding time to rest is critical, especially this time of year. However, naps might not be accessible for everyone. If naps or fitting in more sleep isn’t available in this season, what are some other ways you can prioritize rest and a break? Perhaps setting up grocery pick-up instead of fighting your way through the grocery store? Whatever way you can find rest and simplify your to-do list, I encourage you to do it.

If you’re also feeling any ill-effects of the season change, and you’re not sure how to beat them — let us know. Sam and I both schedule one-on-one times to map out a practice that suits YOU and your lifestyle to bring you back to your center. Most importantly, take time daily to pause; to simply be and breathe as a human being and not a human doing. Grant yourself grace, and know that this season will pass. And remind yourself:

I am allowed to rest. No matter how dark it is outdoors, I hold the light within me. Lighter days are coming soon.

With love + light, always ✨
